Kids, now the centrestage in tellyland

There was a time, years ago, when acting in films wasn’t looked upon as the best thing for child artistes. The general impression was that the kids were compelled to do so due to financial conditions or parental pressure. They had no choice and many had to forego formal education for it.

The scenario has changed today, especially on television. Kids are ruling the roost with many shows having them playing crucial roles, even central characters. Comedy shows and talent hunts too are focussing on them and the best part is that the young guns are having a blast. Ask any of them, even the tiniest one, and they talk of how he or she is pursuing a passion and loving the perks of fame that come with it. Eight-year old Saloni Daini says she’s thrilled when people come up to her and say aap bahut acchi acting karti ho! “It makes me very happy,” she giggles. This youngest comedian in the country is almost viewed as a little wonder, whose histrionics are equivalent or even better than her adult counterparts.

The child artistes are almost becoming role models for others, who want to be in their shows. Take the case of Avika Gor, the youngest bahu of television. Everyone wants to be in her place! It’s a high for her, she admits, when girls her age say main bhi Anandi banna chahti hoon! She’s better known as Anandi today and same is the case with her co-star Avinash Mukherjee. Everyone calls him Jagdish (his screen name) and he loves it. The adulation is overwhelming “but I haven’t changed” maintains the lad.

The shooting schedules are hectic for the young brigade, but studies and homework can never take a backseat. At least that’s what they all say and they have their future plans set too. If Avika wants to become Miss Universe, little Zaynah Vastani, who plays the title role in Aap Ki Antara, wants to be Deepika Padokone when she grows up. Sometimes, that changes to Kareena Kapoor, depending on her mood!

The slightly older Ulka Gupta from Jhansi ki Rani has bigger goals along with acting. “I would also like to be a director or may be a cameraman!” she smiles.

Telly actors struff their stuff

Acting may be their profession, but there’s something else too that our telly actors love doing — walking the ramp! That’s what we discovered the other day when actors from almost all top serials strutted their stuff on the ramp.

This show, put together by Anu and Shashi Ranjan, was a precursor to their upcoming telly event. Actors from Uttaran, Sapna Babul Ka Biddaii, Yeh Rishta kya kahlata hai, Ladies Special, Naa Aana Iss Des Laado, Ballika Vadhu, Pavitra Rishta etc were all seen doing their number. Of course, the actors were not dressed like ramp models, they were very much in their character get-up, but then as one of them remarked, “Aren’t we better known by our characters? If we dress like ourselves and walk down the road, some people may not even recognise us?”

Agle Janam Mujhe Bitiya hi Kijo’s Abhishek carried his light-weight co-star Ratan Rajput in his arms and walked the ramp for Even actors from comedy serials including Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, Sonu Sweety, Yeh Chanda Kanoon Hai were all there. Kiku and Ali Asgar from FIR walked on to the stage in their cop uniforms when anchors (Mansi and Vivaan) were hosting the show. They demanded to know what show was being held and whether the permissions were in place!

The whole team of Baa Bahoo Aur Baby seemed to have a lot of fun on the ramp. Deven ‘Gatoo’ Bhojani made a grand entry in bright red shining clothes and sunglasses and a whistle and had the audience in splits with his wise cracks.

Shree Adi Manav: Fun continues offscreen too

Shree Adi Manav is a fun show and incidentally, there’s loads of fun on the sets as well. Recently, during the shooting of their episode, Shree, Adi and Manav, who were wearing the costumes of Akbar, Salim and Mansingh, made everyone laugh out loud. The scene was particularly hilarious and the entire crew including all technicians couldn’t control their laughter! During this scene, at one point, Shree (Vishal Kotian) picks up a sword to fight Adi (Vrajesh Hirjee). Now Vishal got so involved in his character, that of a blind guy, that he literally started flinging and moving his sword here, there and everywhere violently!

His co-stars had to literally save themselves as they knew that the sword was real and not a wooden one. But everyone around had a great time!

Another twist in Woh Rehne Wali...

Reena Kapoor has been the only constant factor in Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, but the actors opposite her have been replaced five times in the show.

Arjun Punjj, Manoje Biddvai, Vinay Jain, Aamir Ali and Karan Grover have all played husbands to her but now, the story’s taking a twist. Apparently, Karan Grover and his three brothers are going to have an accident and all of them will die in the show. So now, Reena will be a widow.

But knowing our serial makers’ penchant for bumping off characters and then bringing them back after plastic surgeries, it’s quite possible that her husband will be back again in the form of another actor!

Karan lands in legal trouble

Karan Singh Grover has his ex-wife and the producers of Dill Mill Gayye puzzled. Apparently, he used to tell his wife Shraddha Nigam before heir separation (as reported by Mumbai Mirror, October 6) that he was leaving for a 9am shoot but would only reach the sets at 4pm.

Meanwhile, the production house suffered as Karan spent much less time shooting than he was committed to. Now, the producers, Cinevistaa, have filed a complaint against him with CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes Association) and will sue him to cover their losses of about Rs 2 crore.

Karan would often turn up late or not reports to the sets, even though Shraddha thought he was diligently slaving over his shoots. Not so long ago, Shraddha called up Cinevistaa for some work and asked for Karan, only to learn that he hadn't shown up.

Cinevistaa's Managing Director, Sunil Mehta confirmed that his company has written to CINTAA complaining about Karan Grover. He said, “We've written to CINTAA telling them about Karan's behaviour and the fact that we plan to sue him. He used to come at 4pm for a 9am shift and would leave by 10pm. My company has suffered a loss of over Rs 2 crore. We definitely intend to sue him. Shraddha was scandalised when my son told her that he has not reported for work, when she thought he'd left for a 9am shift.”

“At one point of time, we had thought of making a film with him as the lead actor. Now, Karan's film with Mukesh Bhatt is not happening. Ditto for his film with UTV. Success, fame, adulation and power went to his head, I guess.” added Mehta.

We sent Karan a text message, but he remained unavailable for comment.

Scare-giver Again

For everyone who grew up watching the popular television serial Aahat, it’s time to be scared again. For Aahat will soon be back on the television screens, promising viewers haunted houses, ghost, re-incarnations stories and occurrences by paranormal forces.

Telling us about Aahat, our source reveals, “Unlike the last three seasons, the new season will have three young researchers who are part of an institute on paranormal sciences. As these youngsters delve deeper into the subject, the story will unfold under mysterious circumstances. These three characters will be constant through the season, not just for a few episodes. The new season will be aired from a seemingly appropriate Friday the 13th of this month.”

BP Singh, the director and the producer confirms the return of Aahat. He further says, “I hope we are able to terrify the viewers. Many horror serials follow a particular format, but we are trying to break away from the regular way of storytelling. We have different subjects through the season, keeping in mind the modern day sensibilities.”
